Biography

A journeyman musician and songwriter from the Annapolis Valley Nova Scotia, John Tetrault has been writing and performing music for over three decades.

His 4th album, Love/Unlove, showcases John’s diverse background, from the sleek longing of Rebel Face, to the New Orleans-flavoured Honeycake.

John has performed at the Halifax Jazz, Earth, and Lunenburg Folk Festivals, as well as the East Coast Music Awards (ECMA). John has also served as a pit band guitarist for numerous shows, including the Atlantic Theatre Festival.

John was an original member of the Gypsy jazz group Swingology, which won the 2008 Music Nova Scotia Award for Jazz Recording of the Year.  Their second album, Under Paris Skies, was also nominated for an ECMA.

John has released three previous albums: Mermaid Cafe (1997) and Keepsies (2008) with the John Tetrault Group (This album was nominated for a Music Nova Scotia Blues Album Award), and Acadiana (2010), a New Orleans-flavoured project co-produced with the New Orleans Beads.

John had an extended sabbatical in Windsor, Ontario, where he studied guitar, played concerts with the Speakeasy Quartet, gigged at wineries, and hosted open mics.

John returned to Nova Scotia in 2014 and is re-establishing himself as a teacher and performer.  As a teacher and clinician, John has enjoyed the opportunity to share his passion for music with aspiring musicians.  He is a guitar instructor at Kings-Edgehill School, and was a faculty member at the Acadia University Jazz Camp for many years.  John performs regularly at Le Bistro in Halifax.
